Armel Gaulme is a French illustrator born in 1981. He graduated from Penninghen School in Paris in 2003 and began his career alternating between typography design and illustration work for publishing and youth media.

After meeting Maylis de Kerangal, then head of the publishing house Éditions du Baron Perché, he illustrated several books focused on fairy tales (the collection ‘Il était une fée’), historical narratives (‘Alexandre et Darius’), as well as a very personal book, an imaginary travelogue titled ‘Creatures Insolites et Stupéfiantes, Rencontrées au Cours d’un Long Voyage, par M. Georges Nielson.’

His illustration work spans the imaginary (Magicians, with Casterman Jeunesse; works by Pierre Bottero, Marie-Aude Murail…) and more encyclopedic research for concept design in animation, cinema, and video games. He eventually combined these approaches by illustrating ‘The Man Who Would Be King’ by Rudyard Kipling, a fully personal project with no initial intent for publication.

Thanks to Olivier Souillé and the Daniel Maghen gallery, the book was eventually presented by Éditions Caurette, with whom he collaborates on several projects, including the ‘BESTiary,’ inspired by the illustrations of J.J. Grandville. He then turned to the fantasy literature of H.P. Lovecraft with the ‘The Lovecraft Archives’ collection at Bragelonne and to ancient texts for the centennial collection of the publisher ‘Les Belles Lettres.’

For nearly 10 years, Armel Gaulme has been teaching classical drawing at Penninghen and now at the École Georges Méliès. At the beginning of 2019, he joined the team at Superani, an art collective created by Hyunjin Kim and Kim JungGi, two prominent Korean artists. His current projects include design work for a comic in collaboration with Fred Blanchard, creature design for a fantasy film, the Lovecraft collection, an upcoming book with Caurette, and a budding idea for a graphic novel…
