Laurent Durieux

Laurent Durieux, born in Belgium in 1970, is a celebrated illustrator and poster artist, widely recognized for his alternative posters for cult and classic cinema. Drawn to illustration and comic books from an early age, he quickly chose to pursue a career in graphic design. Working as an independent designer since 1994, Durieux found his true artistic language through the world of screen-printed cinema posters.

In 2011, his poster François à l’Américaine, created for an exhibition paying tribute to filmmaker Jacques Tati, caught the attention of several American galleries and publishers, including Mondo, the Austin, Texas-based gallery. This collaboration opened the way for Durieux to create alternative posters for major films such as Apocalypse Now, The Birds, The Shining, and Jaws.

His work has been praised by acclaimed directors including Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, and Paul Thomas Anderson. In 2019, he published the art book Mirages: The Art of Laurent Durieux, with a foreword by Coppola, who underlined the exceptional quality of his work.

Beyond his cinema posters, Durieux collaborated with François Schuiten on the colouring of The Last Pharaoh, a volume of the Blake and Mortimer series published in 2019. He has also created posters for major cultural events, including the Utopiales International Science Fiction Festival in 2017 and the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2022.

In 2025, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Métal Hurlant magazine, a collector’s issue was released with two alternative covers: one by Laurent Durieux and the other by Frederik Peeters.
